Replying to @HelenBranswell: Very important to remember. Just because something happens after something else doesn't mean A caused B.

A reminder: especially among the elderly, some individuals will die shortly after receipt of the vaccine. What we need to understand is the background rate of such deaths. Are they higher then in the vaccinated population? We didn't see that in the trials. Some data from @RtAVM.

Very important to remember. Just because something happens after something else doesn't mean A caused B.

This week I went back to some of the public health experts I interviewed last January and asked them to reflect on what we got wrong during those early days of the outbreak and how that shaped its trajectory in the US.

Great article by @MeganMolteni looking back at where we were with #COVID19 a year ago, where we are now and where we need to go to prevent the next pandemic before it starts.

Thank you! I would be nowhere without the women whose footsteps I dance in. While reciting my poem, I wore a ring with a caged bird—a gift from @Oprah for the occasion , to symbolize Maya Angelou, a previous inaugural poet. Here’s to the women who have climbed my hills before.

Magnificent. @TheAmandaGorman you blew me away with the beauty of your words, your message and your presence.

There's been a lot of discussion about how to communicate uncertainty about vaccines/transmission, guidance for vaccinated people, how to increase vaccine demand/address hesitancy, & what vaccines mean for the "end" of the pandemic.

Here are my thoughts. I call it "the well."

Great points here. I understand everyone wants this to be over. But so far, we don't know if vaccines stop transmission. Likely they do as noted, but we need to confirm that. Only a small % of people have been vaccinated, & deaths are still rising in 30 states. Stay the course.

The fight against COVID will be lengthy, filled with more loss, and yield results slowly. All we can promise is that we will have a plan starting on day one, be candid about what’s happening, and work like hell.

But it is time to double down defense vs the B.1.1.7 superspreader strain. That is what is next up.

The post-Christmas surge of coronavirus cases is worsening considerably in Los Angeles County. The coming days are expected to be critical in determining how bad this next surge will get and how much it will affect conditions at hospitals.

Angelenos:“The number of people dying from #COVID19 daily is now exceeding the avg. number of deaths in LA County for all other causes, including heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, car crashes, suicides + homicides, which is ~170 deaths/day.”

Please #stayhome if you can.

Feeling very grateful to have received my first #COVID19 #vaccine dose. My arm is a little sore, but otherwise no side effects.
Please get #vaccinated when it’s your turn. If you have questions about the vaccine or the process please ask. I’ll be happy to share my experience.
